WUWF News

This month, the University of West Florida's Men's Tennis Team completed a season that will be hard for anyone to match, let alone beat. They recently defeated Hawaii-Pacific to win the NCAA Division II national championship and complete an undefeated season. It's the third championship for the tennis program, and for head coach Derrick Racine.

Racine, who just completed his 16th year at UWF, sat down with WUWF's Bob Barrett to talk about the perfect campaign.

During the interview, Coach Racine talked about:

--The doubles game.  While they struggled with doubles during the season, it was the doubles game that shone during the final match.

--His players. Bruno Savi has an undefeated season and holds the UWF record for most wins by a player. Tony Rajaobelina was a great number two. The whole team stepped up and made for a perfect season.

--On next year. Bruno, Tony and many other players will be leaving. but they will be bringing in some new talent along with some returning players.  Bruno Savi will also be back as an assistant coach.

Bob Barrett has been a radio broadcaster since the mid 1970s and has worked at stations from northern New York to south Florida and, oddly, has been able to make a living that way. He began work in public radio in 2001. Over the years he has produced nationally syndicated programs such as The Environment Show and The Health Show for Northeast Public Radio's National Productions.
