Harper New Studer Institute Director

  There’s a new partnership in town between the University of West Florida and the Studer Institute: with UWF economist Rick Harper becoming the Institute’s Director.

The genesis of both the partnership and Harper’s new job took place a number of months ago, and is partially related to his longtime friendship with former Pensacola News Journal publisher Randy Hammer, who’s now the Studer Institute’s President and CEO.

Harper Expects Good Economic Outlook For Florida

In this week’s Economic Report, Dr. Rick Harper discusses the meeting of state economists this week in Tallahassee. Florida has an office of Economic and Demographic Research (EDR) that reports on the economy to the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House.

“EDR every year has to produce the state economic outlook.  And, one of the most important reasons to do that is because the governor as we head into autumn is going to be evaluating various proposals for state programs or tax relief and has to know the health of the economy,” says Harper.

An Interview With Studer Institute Director Brian Hooper

Last Friday local entrepreneurs Quint and Rishy Studer announced a new initiative: The Studer Institute. Brian Hooper, the Institute’s director sat down and spoke with WUWF’s Lindsay Myers about the purpose and direction of the Institute.

Hooper described the desire behind the Institute by saying, "We hope to educate the community in a compelling and interesting way, whatever it is that we find. We want to look at our community with a sober eye, we want to identify the key issues facing it and we want to try to suggest solutions."
