Nearly 1 in 4 women in the United States have suffered severe physical violence by an intimate partner. Because of statistics like this, October has been proclaimed National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Although there are efforts to combat domestic violence, it continues to be a problem across the region.

In 2014, Escambia County had a slight increase in reported incidents of domestic violence, with a total of 3,201 cases overall and six domestic violence homicides.

Shelter House of Northwest Florida is getting set for its 3rd annual “Luminaria Run to End Domestic & Sexual Violence.” The twilight event will be held this evening at the Destin City Hall Annex beginning at 4:30 p.m.

For this year’s run, there’s a 5K and a 9K.  “The 9K is representative of (the fact that) every nine seconds a woman is beaten in the United States,” says Michelle Sperzel.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so designated by Congress in 1989.  During this month, there’s a concentrated effort to draw attention to the problem of domestic violence, celebrate survivors, and connect those working to end such violent crime.
