Santa Rosa County will become the first community in Florida to earn the National Safety Council's Safe Communities America designation.  The official designation will be made at Thursday morning's meeting of the county commission by Donna Stein-Harris, NSC's Senior Director for Safe Communities America.

Once a municipality applies for the designation, all aspects of the community are evaluated including hospitals, schools, police and emergency preparedness.

Santa Rosa County will be the 24th place in the US to earn the Safe Communities American designation.  Donna Stein-Harris says it's a serious process that takes over a year to complete.

Once the designation is made tomorrow that's not the end of the process. The county will have to be recertified after five years.

The official designation will take place tomorrow morning at 9 at the board of county commissioners regular meeting at the Administrative Office on Caroline Street in Milton.
