If you don’t already have one, this is a good time to prepare a winter emergency kit. You probably have a hurricane kit, but with just a few additions it will work great for any winter emergencies. Be sure you have candles and matches or lighters or battery operated lanterns and a supply of batteries in case of a power outage. Get the phone number of any utilities – power, water, and gas companies and post it somewhere accessible or program it in your cell phone. Consider a battery backup for your computer or any sensitive electronic equipment. Be sure you have bottled water and non-perishable food supplies for a few days and don’t forget pet food if you have pets. Be sure to have blankets to keep warm in case of power failure and a first-aid kit. Be sure you have an evacuation plan and a family meeting place in case of fire.
