Area Begins to Thaw; Reopen

With sunny skies prevailing on this Thursday, Northwest Florida and South Alabama are thawing out from the deep freeze brought on by Winter Storm Leon.

Here's the latest from the Florida Department of Transportation:

Interstates:

Interstate 10 (I-10) - Is now open from Escambia to Jefferson County.

I-110 is now open.

Florida DOT says all state roads and bridges are now open.  They will monitor their conditions overnight.

ESCAMBIA:

- State Road  292, Theo Baars Bridge, OPEN to all traffic (as of 12:15 p.m.)

- U.S. 98, Pensacola Bay Bridge IS NOW OPEN!.

- State Road (S.R.) 292 (Barrancas Avenue) Bayou Chico Bridge is OPEN to traffic.

-State Road 10 (U.S. 90) Nine Mile at Alabama State Line is OPEN to traffic.

OKALOOSA:

- State Road 293 at Mid Bay Bridge is OPEN to traffic.

- William T. Marler Bridge is OPEN to traffic.

- Brooks Bridge is OPEN to traffic.

WALTON:

State Road 285 from I-10 to Bob Sikes Road is now OPEN.

Toll Facilities: 

Tolls have been reinstated on the Garcon Point Bridge in Santa Rosa County and the Mid Bay Bridge in Okaloosa County.
 

As the warming temperatures continue to thaw ice accumulations and roadways reopen, drivers are asked to continue exercising caution.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) NW Florida motorist call center will be operational Jan. 30, from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Drivers should dial toll-free (888) 638-0250 and ask for extension 1199 or dial direct to (850) 330-1199.  Drivers may call Florida 511 from their mobile phones. Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa public and private schools will reopen Friday,  Jan 31.

**The 38th Annual Sandy Sansing Spelling Bee" has been canceled for Thursday, Jan 30; it will be rescheduled at a date/time to be announced later.

Schools in Baldwin, Escambia and Mobile in Alabama will reopen Friday, Jan 31.

Northwest Florida State College will be closed most of today (Thurs),  with plans to reopen for classes beginning at 4:30 p.m. or later.

The University of West Florida and Pensacola State College will remain closed today (Thurs). Both institutions will resume normal operations on Friday, Jan 31.

Health Advisory:

Effective immediately, the Florida Department of Health in Escambia County (DOH-Escambia) is issuing a health alert for Fletcher creek in Escambia County, Florida. DOH-Escambia officials have been advised that one or more derailed train cars may be leaking potentially hazardous contents into the Creek at the derailment site in McDavid.

Health officials advise against contacting, consuming or otherwise using water from Fletcher Creek obtained from the immediate vicinity of the train derailment.  Further advisories regarding possible health concerns will follow as details become available. Transportation:

  • Pensacola International Airport is now OPEN. For more information visit fly.pensacola.com.
  • Northwest Florida Regional Airport is now OPEN.will open Thursday with minimal staff.
  • PASSENGERS are advised to check with their airlines for specific flight information.
  • Escambia County Area Transit (ECAT) and WAVE bus service in Okaloosa County have suspended service for Thursday, Jan 30, with plans to resume normal operations Friday, Jan 31.

Gulf Power:

Gulf Power Company is still experiencing a few outages. As of 2 pm, the Gulf Power Outage Map showed 16 outages, with 215 customers affected.  Call Gulf Power at 1 (800) 225-5797 for customer service.

Military Bases:  All local bases reopened as of noon today, Jan. 30.

  •  VA Services:  The Gulf Coast VA resumed normal operations at noon today, Jan. 30. 

General Safety Information
