"Katya Ivanov joined WUWF as a student intern in May 2012 and then worked as the local All Things Considered host from August 2012 until July 2013. She graduated with a BA in Film/Telecommunications from the University of West Florida in December 2012. She now works as a full-time reporter and announcer fort WUWF.

Katya also serves as staff advisor for Argo Studios, the UWF film production club she founded as a student. In her spare time, she likes to write, work on art projects and make short films."

"The Vagina Monologues" Draws Attention To Women's Issues

A group of local young professional women are staging a production of "The Vagina Monologues" at  Artel Gallery in downtown Pensacola as part of the global V-Day movement. The “V” in V-Day stands for “Victory, Valentine and Vagina.” The movement calls for the end of violence against women and girls worldwide. The non-profit organization was founded on Valentine’s Day 1998 by Eve Ensler, the author of “The Vagina Monologues.” Ensler based the play on interviews she conducted with 200 women regarding sex, relationships, and violence against women.

Pulp Magazine Cover Art On Display At UWF's Art Gallery

An exhibit of pulp magazine cover art is currently on display at the University of West Florida’s TAG Art Gallery.  Modern Pulp” draws attention to illustrations from artists who are not widely remembered.

The exhibit is the product of an interdepartmental collaboration between faculty and students in the English and art department. Many of the magazines on display belong to Dr. David Earle, an associate professor of English at UWF.

Local Teens Perform Shakespeare Monologues

The Southeastern Teen Shakespeare Company recently performed its monologue showcase. The group, also referred to as "SETSCO,"  is partnering with the West Florida Public Library for a year of events promoting Shakespeare’s work.

Each of the student actors chose and prepared a monologue out of the Shakespeare canon for their annual monologue showcase. J.D. Thiemann joined SETSCO four years ago. One of the monologues he performed that evening was the St. Crispin’s Day speech from “Henry V.”

"Extremophiles" Exhibit Showcases Images of Harsh Environments

University of West Florida biology professor Wade Jeffrey has conducted research in some of the world’s harshest environments.  Dr. Jeffrey captured the beauty, serenity, and fragility of those places in a series of photographs that are now on display in Gallery 88.  The exhibit is titled “Extremophiles.”

“Every time I travel, I carry a camera and am fascinated by the things I see. So I’m doing science on one hand, and sometimes take a photograph in the other,” Jeffrey said.

Local Club Brings Rowing To Pensacola

The Pensacola Rowing Club was founded last year and continues to meet. The club practices in Bayou Texar by Bayview Park in Pensacola. Brendan O’Brien is club president and a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. He has been a Pensacola resident for ten years.
