Shutting
Down
The end of
an era has
arrived for
Woodham High
School.
Named for
former
Superintendent
William J.
Woodham, the
school
opened in
1965. But,
after 42
years, plans
call for
Woodham to
become a
middle
school. Dr.
Michael
Roberts
served as
principal
for the
school's
final two
years, with
much of that
time spent
dealing with
the uproar
caused by
news of the
closing. He
spoke to
Sandra
Averhart
during the
final days
of class at
Woodham.

Teacher's
Perspective
The closure
of Woodham
has been
hard for
many of the
school’s
teachers.
Sandra Leigh
is a
Physical
Education
instructor
and former
volleyball
and softball
coach, who
arrived at
the school
in the early
1970s. She
has been
outspoken
about the
move, saying
that Woodham
is not
designed to
be a middle
school. But,
the deal is
done. So,
now after 35
years at the
Burgess Road
campus,
she’ll soon
head to
Washington.
Sandra
Averhart
played on
one of
Leigh’s many
Titan
softball
teams and
recently
visited the
school to
talk with
her former
coach about
Woodham’s
end.

Last
Call
Commencement
ceremonies
were held
May 22nd for
the Woodham
High School
Class of
2007. It was
the 42nd and
the last
group of
seniors to
graduate
from
Woodham,
before it’s
conversion
into a
middle
school.
Initially,
the
district’s
closure plan
was met with
great
emotional
resistance.
But, there’s
been time to
adjust. Now,
in the
waning days
of the
school’s
existence,
alumnus
Sandra
Averhart
visited the
campus to
see how
students and
staff are
coping.
