Local 'Move to Amend' Chapter Forming

  Pensacola’s Coffee Party will host a meeting Wednesday evening, to form local coalitions within the national “Move to Amend” campaign.

On a 5-4 vote, the Citizens United ruling in January 2010 gave corporations and unions the green light to spend unlimited sums on ads and other political tools. In effect, the court said in that regard, corporations had the same 1st amendment rights as individual persons.

Century Seeks Chinese Business in Dothan

A delegation from Century is heading to Dothan this week, in hopes of luring businesses and jobs from China to north Escambia County.

The Century Town Council last month approved about $3,700 in economic development funding to staff the U.S.-China Manufacturing Symposium on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Mayor Freddie McCall is leading the entourage from Century – which is the only small community in the Florida Panhandle to be invited.

Changes Upcoming at Greater Pensacola Chamber

Some major changes could be on the horizon at the Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce, with the ultimate goal of getting it out of the sunshine.

The Chamber’s board of directors gave unanimous approval last week to begin the trek to privatize the organization. That would make the new Chamber arrangement exempt from Florida’s Sunshine Law that covers open meetings and records.

Scott Scuttles DOC Move to North Hill

Gov. Rick Scott’s trip to Pensacola last week involved more than just a closed political fundraiser. He also heard about the controversial plan to relocate a state probation and parole office to the city’s North Hill neighborhood.

The Governor  Friday directed Department of Corrections Secretary Michael Crews to renew the office’s existing lease at the current facility on North Davis Highway. Plans were to move the offices to the old Coca-Cola plant on Palafox. That drew fire from a number of North Hill residents at the last City Council meeting.
