Area Begins to Thaw; Reopen

With sunny skies prevailing on this Thursday, Northwest Florida and South Alabama are thawing out from the deep freeze brought on by Winter Storm Leon.

Here's the latest from the Florida Department of Transportation:

Interstates:

Interstate 10 (I-10) - Is now open from Escambia to Jefferson County.

I-110 is now open.

Florida DOT says all state roads and bridges are now open.  They will monitor their conditions overnight.

NETC Sees Change of Command

The Naval Education and Training Command is under new management. A change of command ceremony was held Friday at the Museum of Naval Aviation aboard NAS Pensacola.

After two years on the job, Rear Adm. Donald Quinn stepped down at NET-C commander in a traditional Navy ceremony. He was succeeded by Rear Adm. Michael White. Quinn is also retiring after a 35-year naval career.

If you thought the ceremony would be one of solemn talk and sad faces, then you would have had another think coming. And it was led by Quinn, whose nickname is “DQ.”

Santa Rosa County Earns Designation As A Safe Community

Santa Rosa county joined an exclusive fraternity this week with a ceremony at Thursday morning's county commission meeting.   Donna Stein-Harris, the National Safety Council's Senior Director for Safe Communities America addressed the Commission officially designating Santa Rosa County the 24th "safe Community" in the US and the first in Florida.  Stein-Harris called it "a really big deal" and congratulated the people in the county who worked to earn the designation.

Touart Dies After Long Illness

Flags at Escambia County facilities are being flown at half-staff in memory of interim County Administrator George Touart, who died this morning after a long battle with cancer.

Touart passed away early this Friday morning at his home, with his family by his side.  He was 65 years old.

Council Rejects Airport Concessions Deal

The Pensacola City Council Thursday evening deadlocked in voting on a food and drink concessions deal for Pensacola International Airport. The 4-4 outcome means the proposal fails.

Council members PC Wu, Megan Pratt, Charles Bare and Sherri Myers voted against the connection plan. Those voting in favor were Jewell Cannada-Wynn, Larry B. Johnson, Andy Terhaar and Gerald Wingate. Councilman Brian Spencer abstained.
